Welcome

We love September • September is always a special month, a time of softening light and the blissful last few days of hot sunshine. This year it is even more precious as, all being well, across the country you can hear a huge sigh of collective relief as millions of parents wave their little darlings off to school for the first time in months. Kitchen tables are no longer ad hoc classrooms, and the responsibilities of number bonds and spelling tests are passed back to teachers. Our gardens, too, get a bit of a rest from footballs and rampaging children (or grandchildren), and slip into a time of peace as we glide elegantly towards autumn.

Expert’s choice Single dahlias • These cottage garden favourites come in a huge range of shapes and colours, says Graham Rice

Late summer colour • As more gardens in our 2 for 1 Garden Entry scheme continue to reopen, some of their head gardeners share secrets for making summer colour last

Love late summer colour? • For more tips from head gardeners and details about gardens around the UK, visit our online directory gardenersworld.com/ gardens/september-colour

The Full Monty • Space is not just about the size of our plot, it is also a relationship with nature that lets in light and air, allowing plants – and us – to breathe, says Monty

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence
