Welcome

We love November • The more sensible dormice have been hibernating for a while now, our gardens are sounding the last trump and we are settling into earlier nights and socially distant Strictly Come Dancing. Thank goodness there are still a few surprises left in our gardens: a bit of zip, shimmer and twinkle before we lurch into deep mid-winter. If I may be allowed an understatement, 2020 may not have been the cheeriest of years but at least, for those of us lucky enough to have them, our gardens have been around to give us both strength and escape.

Expert’s choice Pittosporum • Varied in colour and versatile in the garden, these shrubs are deservedly popular, says Graham Rice

The Full monty • With plant extinction rising and biodiversity under threat, it is our moral duty as gardeners to make the right choices now before it’s too late, says Monty

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence

Clippings • Our roundup of the month’s latest gardening news and views

He is also a director of Grow2Know, a nonprofit project empowering young people through gardening, set up in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster.
