How readers helped to create our front covers

We love August • August often gets a bit of bad press – the excitement of midsummer is over, the lawns and fields are a bit parched and many gardens are looking a little careworn, as if suffering from a hangover after a hard night. This is grossly unfair as August is a month made for bold colours, with annuals at their best and all those exotics soaking up the sunshine. Ignore the lawns – they will recover – and, instead, concentrate on colour. Let the crimsons cascade, the oranges overfow, the pinks preen, the blues bop and the yellows yell.

Expert’s choice Sunflowers • With a multitude of colours and heights, there’s a sunflower or ten for everyone, says Graham Rice

The Full Monty • Monty shares lessons learnt from a beautiful, drought-tolerant Grecian garden on how we can adapt to the challenges of climate change

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence
