Gr 4-7-From the ice ages of prehistory to the changing climate of the present day, the effects of ice and cold on a range of flora and fauna are explored through interesting details. When presenting information on extinct and contemporary animals, each spread includes physical details, habitats, and the current conservation level. Unusual facts are offered throughout, e.g., the Greenland shark can live to be 500 years old, and the female sharks do not reproduce until they are 100. An Inuit ice house or igloo can be built in under one hour. The book also discusses exploration of the North and South Poles, adventures that often had tragic outcomes. The effects of climate change on both the animals and the physical aspects of the regions serves as a recurring theme. Magnificent photographs, CGIs, and factual annotations make this an exciting work to peruse. It offers great value for reports and classroom use. VERDICT This comprehensive, beautiful, and highly useful title will appeal to all age groups and all libraries.-Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, formerly at Trinity-Pawling School, NY
