Groundhog's Burrow

ebook

Every February 2, residents of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania awaken a groundhog from its winter's nap. According to lore, if the groundhog casts a shadow, then six more weeks of winter lie ahead. If not, then residents can look forward to an early spring. This Groundhog Day tradition has roots in the behavior of real groundhogs, which briefly emerge from hibernation in late winter before returning to their burrows for the rest of the season. Clear text and colorful photos and diagrams will engage young readers as they learn about the natural habitat, physical characteristics, diet, and behavior of groundhogs. Age-appropriate activities and critical-thinking questions give readers a chance to make observations and gain insights beyond the facts and figures.

K-Gr 3-Large, clearly labeled photos and diagrams introduce readers to animals that spend part of their lives underground. Engaging texts explain how holes, burrow, and dens provide places to avoid predators, store food, raise young, and hibernate. Relevant questions and suggestions for things to do are interspersed throughout each volume, and a final "Science Lab" activity encourages even more participation. These interactive features and well-designed layout make the volumes fine choices for use with groups. A website hosts links to other online resources.
