Every February 2, residents of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania awaken a groundhog from its winter's nap. According to lore, if the groundhog casts a shadow, then six more weeks of winter lie ahead.       K-Gr 3-Large, clearly labeled photos and diagrams introduce readers to animals that spend part of their lives underground. Engaging texts explain how holes, burrow, and dens provide places to avoid predators, store food, raise young, and hibernate. Relevant questions and suggestions for things to do are interspersed throughout each volume, and a final "Science Lab" activity encourages even more participation. These interactive features and well-designed layout make the volumes fine choices for use with groups. A website hosts links to other online resources.
