Gr 1-2-A cartoon scientist and a canine sidekick that delivers occasional "Hank's Woofs of Wisdom!" asides ("A giraffe's heart weighs about 25 pounds.") act as tour guides for these introductions to large, scary, and just plain impressive animals. Liberally sprinkled with exclamation points, the texts offer basic but systematic information about each creature's range, diet, family life, and human or environmental challenges. The many color photos of the creatures in their natural settings are of average or better quality, and there are many memorable close-ups of tongues, teeth, and claws. A "Dr. Bob's Fast Fact Board" ends each volume with additional interesting tidbits.
