Raised by stepparents after the loss of their birth parents, Liz and Meredith McCallister are the only constants in each other's lives—until Meredith is murdered in her lake home. Devastated by the loss, Liz becomes desperate to know why Meredith was killed. But the more she digs into her sister's past, the uglier the story gets. As a teenager, Meredith gave up a child for adoption. When Liz meets her niece for the first time, she finds an angry, troubled teenager, whose reappearance in her mother's life may have been the catalyst that got Meredith killed. When Liz digs deeper into her sister's life and murder, she finds that their family had many buried secrets. But as Liz uncovers the truth, she realizes that not all secrets were meant to come to light and her efforts have drawn the attention of someone who is determined to keep the past hidden—even if the cost is Liz's life.

The wealthy McCallister family may be "old money," but that doesn't stop old scandals from coming back to haunt them. When Meredith McCallister is murdered and an autopsy reveals her clandestine past pregnancy, her sister, Liz, realizes that Meredith's life may have held more secrets than her death. Liz's search for answers uncovers not only a long-lost niece, but also the dark and disturbing dysfunction lurking beneath her family's seemingly perfect surface. Can she bring justice to their many victims without becoming one herself? Richards (author of the Jessica Kallan mystery series, published under the name Susan C. Richards) sets out fast-paced and frantic psychological suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Narrator Jennifer Jill Araya's expressive performance makes the characters sympathetic, though self-destructive, and creates an engrossing listening experience. Araya embodies Liz in this first-person narrative, propelling listeners through each turbulent twist. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking an intricately plotted suspense full of family secrets and scandal; just when you think it's safe to trust someone, think again. Recommended for fans of Joy Fielding, Jillian Medoff, and Tarryn Fisher.--Lauren Hackert

Jennifer Jill Araya narrates an intricate family drama brimming with secrets and the price paid to keep them. Sisters Liz and Meredith have found that the only thing they can rely on is each other--until Liz learns Meredith has been murdered. As she grapples with the ramifications of losing her sister, she discovers a series of mysteries that not only provide a motive, but also paint a much different picture of the sister she thought she knew. Araya maintains a steady narration throughout, which occasionally plays against the ominous tension building in the story. She shines when voicing Liz's thoughts and the narrative. Some of the characters' voices don't match the author's descriptions, but Araya stays focused on moving the story forward, making for a thrilling performance.
