Whether depression is felt mildly or acutely, temporarily or persistently, it strikes just about everyone at some point. Drs. Minirth and Meier believe, however, that the emotional pain of depression can be overcome and avoided. Drawing from their professional training, counseling experience, and biblical knowledge, they explore the complex relationship between spiritual life and psychological health and then spell out basic steps for recovering from depression and maintaining a happy, fulfilling life.

Written in 1978 and updated in 2013, this book sprinkled with Bible verses presents depression and anxiety in the context of sin and alienation from God. It advocates the treatment of depression with Christian counseling and, in some cases, medication. The book is addressed to those with depression and those who may have family members and friends who suffer from it. Gabriel Travesser's tone sometimes sounds flat and detached, sometimes soft and soothing. He reads at a steady pace that is easy to listen to. The book's appendices present classifications of depression and case studies. J.E.M. (c) AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine

In this updated version of their book Happiness Is a Choice, Minirth and Meier examine the various symptoms of depression and advise readers about ways to deal with negative emotions and anxieties. The authors use their biblical knowledge to explain how spiritual strength is tied closely to psychological health. Ultimately, they hope to help the reader take the necessary steps to achieve a fulfilling life. Unfortunately, Gabriel Travesser’s performance as narrator is monotone and dour. At times, he actually sounds depressed. And while he may be attempting to convey a tone of somber authority, the end result is an audiobook that will provide little happiness for listeners. A Baker paperback.
